Millions of dollars needed to save children from cold: UNICEF

ISLAMABAD: The UNICEF on Sunday warned that children in flood-hit areas of Pakistan, suffering from acute respiratory infections and malnutrition, were at risk because of the harsh cold weather and that the fund needed $82.1 million to continue its life-saving and recovery programmes for children in the affected areas.
A UNICEF official said that additional funds would be needed to cure the children suffering from malnutrition and to stop the spread of polio.

The official said that although the majority of flood-hit people returned to their homes, many still remained with no homes or shelter.

“Many of them with no homes, food, money... in the north, where snow has fallen, we are delivering warm clothes and food supplies... The running cold wave is sharply increasing the number of respiratory infections and malnutrition among children”, he said.
