Sharp rise in prices of onion, tomato

KARACHI  (December 28, 2010) : Once again onion and tomato rates have sharply increased in wholesales and retail markets of Karachi. According to wholesales persisting shortage supply of onion, its export to India and increasing in demand supply gap resulting in price increase.

Tomato is currently selling in retail markets at Rs 90 to Rs 100 per kg and onion at Rs 50 to Rs 60 per kg The onion rate increased during the recent days, as few days back the retailers were selling superior grade onion at Rs 30 per Kg to Rs 35 per kg and tomato at Rs 45 to 50 per kg

Tomato and onion regarded as one of the most essential commodities of every household. Vegetable wholesalers have attributed the current increase in tomato rates to the short supply from Sindh. Due to recent floods, onion production in Sindh alone registered a decline of 500,000 to 600,000 tonnes this season, traders at Karachi's main vegetable market said Pakistan's annual onion yield is estimated at five to six million tonnes.
